To
help them explore and expand their creative potential, Sound-Seekers
are drawn to communities of musicians who share their knack
for collaboration and experimentation.
Throughout history, these music communities have had a profound
effect on the art and culture of their day. The New York and
Los Angeles bee bop communities of the 40's, 50's and 60's,
the Brazilian Tropicalia movement of the late 60's, and Chicago's
AACM are all examples of these vital, ground-breaking communities.

A
current example of this type of community is in Chicago, a city
with a long and rich history of community-focused music, beginning
with the jazz and blues artists who migrated from the South,
and continuing on through the 1960's with the emergence of the
AACM.
Now, Chicago music collectives like Him, The Vandermark 5, Tortoise,
Directions in Music, Isotope 217, Toe 2000, Brokeback, and the
Chicago Jazz Orchestra are eroding the boundaries between different
genres of music. In their short careers these musicians have
been able to explore many more creative paths than musicians
that operate within the context of one band or one genre of
music, who tour and record primarily to sell albums.
Isotope 217 is one of Chicago's most exciting young ensembles,
whose members come from a variety of different technical backgrounds
and stylistic influences. Isotope's recordings and live performances
over the last few years demonstrate a dynamic sound that often
blurs the line between compositional and improvisational music.
